To (he Sheriffs of the seFerai Couatiei of North Carolina: IT is deemed not only desirable biit »n imperative du ty, tl)at early measures be taken to accumulate a supply of winter clothing for the North Carolina troops tiow in the field. The scarcity of material for sale in the State, and the uncertainty of procuring supplies fr(.m abroad, force us to rely on our domestic resources It iy though!; that every family can spare one or more Hl.'inkets without personal incoavenience, or a pair of Woolen Sock^, and it is believed that for nuoh a pur- po-e a call would l e responded to with alacrity. It has therefore been concluded that an appeal for this purpose be made to the great body of the people, and with that view 1' ha.ve to request the Sheritfs of the sevi ral Counties to act as ngents of the State, to solicit a contribution of this kind. To this end they are requested to circulate this no tice, and employ agents in every diatriat of their county to further the matter. .Ml contributions of tljis kind mav b« boxed and for warded to »hf nearest Kailroad Depot, and due informa- I ‘T,, ‘ oi is, ju tion thereof sent to the Governor. ! Law; Auor-.ey General; Re The Sheritls are further requested to furnish to the . ‘***' ‘ icitoi, t.ounse or Governor a «st of the donors. ^ torney; .\uclioneers: The transportation of these donations will be at the expense of the State—and, the bill for such servio-i should be duly forwarded for payment. IlKNRY T. CLARK, Governor of N. C. In cheerful compliance ieith the several requests con- taine‘1 in the abov** Cir.'-'ular of Ilis Excellency Governor (,'l;irk, the undersignel, Sheriff of Cumberiand, has ra»de provision within the several Districts of the 'oun- ty for the reo>ption .of coutribui.jon9 for the provision and comfort of our gallant soldiers. As it is our pride to know that the good old county of (’nmberbirid has sent forth her best and bravest sons to the battle-field, so will it be to us gratifying to feel that we h;»ve ministered fo their necessities and cheer fully contributed to their wants It i« therefore un- neco'Sary to make any appeal to the charities of a peo ple whose gcerous and warm hearts ever beai respon sive to the call^' of patriotic duty. Lynch to the Navy Department, ot the re cent uaval engagement near Newport’s News: The water being too low in the Chesapeake and the Albe'inarJe Canal for this vessel (the Sea Bird) to proceed to Roanoke Island, we last even ing steamed down and anchored ki the bight ot Craney Island. This morning, a little before day light, we weigh“ed anchor and stood across toNew- port’s Neivs. About 7 30 a. til. an enemy’s steamer passed out of James River, with aschoon- ^ er in tow, and steered for Fortress Monroe. We in.mediately gave chase,, when she cut the schoon er adrift, and carried a h^vy head ef steam in order” to get under the cover of numerous meo-ol- war lying off the Fortress. W'e were fast closing iu with her, however, w4ien the explosion of our second shell set her wn fire. In the belief that her destruction was inevitable, knowing that her crew could be rescued by boats from the vessels not far distant from her, and ittein^ unsafe for St hi vessel to approach her, we steered for and took the abandoned schooner iu tow. In the meantime one large steamer from Newport’s News and ten others from Hampton Roads and the For tress, were making theif way towards u*, when an exciting scene took place; we endeavoring to carry the prize into port, and they making every effort to‘intercept and, by constant firing, disable us. Many shells from the ships and the Fortress exploded quite near us, and tour or five passed immediately over the deck. W^e succeeded in fighting our way through, with the prize in tow, without the slightest injury to either, and grate fully attribute our escape to something .more than chance or human agency. We k.now that a large steamer was s,truck on-ce and a smaller one twice, by our shot; the former was reported to be seri ously injured. Tlte prize is a large schooner, her hold coated with zinc and filled with water for Fortress Monroe. CONVENTION ON NORTIJ CAROLINA, Alatnnnce—Giles .Mebane, Thos. Ruffin. Aiexatuler—A. C. Stewart. E J . HALE Corrfspondence with the I^orlh.—We see It announced that, by the flag of truce which leaves NoTfolk almost daily for Fortress Monroe, persons in the South may communicate with the North. Hundreds of letters are frequently carried in this manner; but aW are carefully examined both by the Confederate and United States officers. To pi^event tte abuse of this’privilega on the part of those who are inclined to fill twenty or thirty j sheets of letter paper, General Huger has issued j an order that hereafter no communication will be sent which covers more than an ordinary aiied page. All reference to political or military af fairs mu.st be carefully avoided, and an enclosure of three or five cents made to secure transmissiop. The outside address ot the epistle should be Norfolk and flag of truce.”—(Jhas. Mercury, Federal Diutrust of Kentuckiant.—The Louis ville Courier, of the 28th ult., says:— A g'ontleman informs us that while near Crit tenden’s camp at Calhoun, the other day, he learn ed that the distrust of Kentuckians is so great that uoue are permitted to do picket duty for fear they will desert. It mu.st be very comfortable to the Kentuckians to be treated in this way by their “brethren” of the Nortfi. It is a notable fact that they are nowhere sent in advance. Curt fvr Asthma.—The following simple remedy is said to afford an almost magical relief in cases of asthma. A sufl’erer records his gratitude by having it published for the benefit of his fellow sufterers: The leaves of the Stramoniym, (or Jamestown weed,) dried in the shade, saturated with a pret ty strong solution of saltpetre and smoked fio as to inhale deeply the fumes. In order to inhale, till the mouth with the smoke, then open the lips and draw in the breath. It miy strangle at first, il taken too freely, but it will Iwsen the trip that seems to i«pasni the breathing tubes, and bring up the phlegm that settles in »he bottom of the lungs. lli ursty.—A farmer once called upofl the late Earl Fitzwilliam, to represent that his crop of wheat had been seriously injured in a field ad joining a certain wood where his lordship’s hounds ha*l during the winter frequently met to hunt. He stated that the young wheat had been so cut up and destroyed that in some parts he could not hope for any produce. “Well, my friend,” said his lordship, ‘‘I am aware that we have done considerable injury; and if you can produce an estimate of the loss you have sustain ed, I will repay yi>u ” The fanner replied, that anticipating his lordship's consideration and kind ness, he had rejuested a friend to assist him in crop seemed ({uite destroyed would not more than repay him. The Earl immediately gave him the money. As the harvest however ap proached, the wheat grew, and in those parts of the field which were most trampled, the wbeat was stronge.st and most luxuriant. The farmer weifXt again to his lordship, and being introduced, said “1 am come again, my lord, respecting the field of wheat adjoining such a wood.’l Hislord-» ship immediately recollected the circumstance. ‘.‘W^ell my frtend, »lid i not allow sufficient to j remunerate you for your los.s.''" “Ws. my lord, I 1 find that I have su.-tained no loss at all, tor j where the irorses had most out up the laDd th® j crop is the iii-'st protnisin^, and I have therefore I brought the Iju4 a-ain ” ‘‘.\h!” exclaimed i the vetuirabk* Karl, “that is what I like?; this is I as it should he between nr.iu and man.” He then entered into a conversaf, ion witiiidhe farmer, uak- ifi.ir him sotue questions about his fnmily—how ! many children he had e.tc. His lordship, then j went into another room and returuina; presented j the farmer with a cheque for illUO. saying, “Take i care of this, and w>"hen your oldest nm is of age, present it to him and tell him the occasion that [•ro'dticed it.” We know not which to admire most, ihe benevolence or the wisd un displayed by this illustrious inan^ifor while doing a noble act of generosity, he was handing down a lesson of int«Jgrity to another generation—Hnt.
